9 months after the terrible earthquake struck Pakistan and India on 8th October 2005, CAI is able to start closing down its relief work in Pakistani Kashmir.

Immediately after the earthquake the Islamabad office of CAI was contacted by many of the 90 local doctors in Pakistan who CAI had trained in ‘Emergency Maternal and Child Healthcare’. CAI sent doctors out to some of the affected areas straight away, to start providing medical care and distribute vital emergency supplies. In the early days CAI also helped with food distribution.

CAI set up a field hospital in a camp in Muzafarabad, for about 4,000 people made homeless by the earthquake, which we ran throughout the winter and following spring. Realising that the children living on the camp were receiving no schooling, CAI also set up and ran a relief school in the camp.

Now the residents of the relief camp can return to their homes, or have found new homes. Medical services in the area are also slowly recovering from the loss of life of many staff, and the damage to buildings. CAI can now close down its services at the camp.

CAI is enormously grateful to the many very generous donors to our earthquake relief work. It enabled CAI to respond very quickly in the terrible days immediately following the quake, and the gruelling winter that followed. CAI raised over £50,000 in the UK and Pakistan. Many hundreds of children and pregnant mothers have received medical attention at a time when their homes had been destroyed along with a lot of the local medical services.
