Work continues in Bosnia
As a result of the casualty project Sarajevo has been officially recognised as a teaching centre for Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) training. In these courses doctors are taught to recognise and treat seriously ill or injured children and infants. The Sarajevo course takes place annually and places on it are sought by doctors from the whole of Bosnia. The courses are self sustaining and are organised and financed entirely by the Bosnians.
CAI equipped an ambulance for child emergencies and this ambulance is now being used for the safe movement of seriously ill children.
Our present project is in Banja Luka, a town which was not directly damaged during the war, but whose hospital has suffered from the economic downturn since the war ended 11 years ago. Our aim is to ensure that every ill infant or child is kept warm, has enough oxygen, is hydrated and fed, and that there is basic resuscitation equipment available in the hospital. As the equipment provision prceeds, we are arranging on-site education in resuscitation of the newborn in local maternity hospitals, partly with the help of locally trained APLS instructors, as well as a visit from a paediatric registrar to Bana Luka Hospital to help with the programme.
CAI is extremely grateful to Lions Clubs International who have supported our work in Bosnia for many years and continue to provide help to improve the opportunities for healthcare for Bosnian children.
Lions Club International are now looking to support CAI develop the casualty unit in Sarajevo.
CAI is a member organisation of Landmine Action working to stop further landmines. You can sign Landmine Action's petition at www.clearup.org or telephone 020 7820 0222 for more information.
