Bosnia (news from the CAI Bulletin - Dec 2003)

Read the latest news about Bosnia

There are an estimated 7,000 amputees in Bosnia, many of whom are children. Many of these amputees are a result of landmine injury.

With an estimated 30,000 minefields and an approximate 1 million mines still in the ground, many still unidentified, the number of children injured will continue to rise.

This means the provision of CAI's new project (due to start shortly) - improving the children's emergency and casualty services in and around Sarajevo, will play an important part in helping save lives of those children who need emergency medical help.

Work continues to improve and upgrade the facilities and to ensure local medical staff receive training at the hospital in Bihac.

CAI is extremely grateful to Lions Clubs International who have supported our work in Bosnia for many years and continue to provide help to improve the opportunities for healthcare for Bosnian children.

Lions Club International are now looking to support CAI develop the casualty unit in Sarajevo.

CAI is a member organisation of Landmine Action working to stop further landmines. You can sign Landmine Action's petition at www.clearup.org or telephone 020 7820 0222 for more information.
